Abstract

Autoethnography involves autobiography and ethnography as a personalised account of lived experiences to explore social phenomena. It has been used in several subject areas, relies on reflective practice, and can promote the development of critical thinking. In this study we showcase three anonymised autoethnographic accounts by inexperienced sports coaches in the UK as part of their assessed work for an undergraduate sports degree programme. By drawing on memorable episodes from their coaching practice, these students illustrate the potential of autoethnography to enable learning by doing. In their creative story-telling, interpretation and analysis they show theoretical engagement and understanding of the feminist empowerment of girls and young women, Imposter Phenomenon Theory, and Structuration Theory.
