Abstract

This article is an attempt to write a history of the Home Guard units in the Isle of Axholme during the Second World War. The author recently finished researching a book on the Lincolnshire Home Guard. To ensure it covered the whole county, including the Isle of Axholme, he put out an appeal in 2023 for information on the Eastoft Community Forum but this failed to elicit a response . Unperturbed, utilising the meagre records that survive (often newspaper reports from the Epworth Bells and the odd photograph in the local archives) this article on the Home Guard of the Isle of Axholme has been written. In some ways the unit seems typical to others across the county and country, but like most units in the force it does have its peculiarities and the tantalising hints of cooperation across county borders with the Trent Patrol and the 47th West Riding Battalion in Yorkshire makes the unit worth a stand-alone study. It seems that some of the Home Guard from the Isle was organised as part of the Yorkshire Home Guard and uniquely the women in the rest of the Isle’s units were dressed in berets adorned with the cap badge of the local regiment.
