Abstract
Dad’s Army, which is often regarded as a classic of British comedy, is regarded by many academics as perpetuating myths about the Home Guard during the Second World War. In this article, the fictional town of Walmington-on-Sea has been reconstructed from cartographic evidence within the television series and identified as a landscape worthy of academic study. By superimposing the town’s anti-invasion defences onto a fictional landscape, this article demonstrates that Walmington-on-Sea’s Home Guard platoon created defence in depth, with overlapping fields of fire, in keeping with contemporary military doctrine.
