Abstract

The Francis Burnout Inventory assesses work-related psychological wellbeing by two scales designed to measure emotional exhaustion in ministry and satisfaction in ministry, applying the theory of balanced affect. The objective of the present study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and test the construct validity and internal consistency reliability of the Francis Burnout Inventory for the Brazilian context among a non-probabilistic sample of 588 Brazilian clergy. The results provide support for the balanced affect model: while emotional exhaustion leads to thoughts of leaving ministry, satisfaction in ministry reduces that effect. The instrument is commended for application in further research among clergy in Brazil.
